5 Things to Remove From Your Business in 2023

When your feed begins to fill up with 2023 to-do’s, goal-setting lists, and New Years’ Resolution ideas for the next 12 months, it’s easy to feel straight-up overwhelmed. I know I’m already getting ads for planners that promise to get my life together, emails to sign up for the latest fun conference, and invitations to join 6 different mastermind groups that promise to show me how to TikTok and Snapchat… and we haven’t even finished this year yet!

As a business owner, woman, and mother, I do love planning out my calendar. It helps me ensure that my daily actions are steering me towards my big goals, and that I have scheduled breaks in place to look forward to. What I don’t love is feeling like I need to do everything, for everyone, every day. I’ve learned that removing what doesn’t serve me in life, and in business, makes for a much smoother and fun ride!

As you review your 2022 and plan your 2023, I recommend removing these 5 things from your future business, to create more space and ease in your life and business over the next 12 months.

Remove the product that doesn’t sell well or bring you joy.

If I am offering a product or service, it has to either earn well, or bring me joy. Hopefully both. Now is a great time to look at your offerings and remove any that you just HATE to actually deliver, or those that have very little profit margin. The exception here would be if any low-profit items are loss leaders that build sales for you elsewhere, as long as it’s fun and easy to deliver.

Remove the attorney/CPA/vendors that do not align.

You should have a team around you (always) that support you and see the bigger vision for your business, and your life. Have a CPA who talks down to you? No thanks. Finding your attorney takes forever to respond? No ma’am. Life gets to be easy, and that includes finding professionals that are right for you! If you need to make a switch, now is the time to start asking your circle for personal recommendations, and to start interviewing new options,

Remove Social Media Accounts.

Not ALL social media accounts, don’t be silly! You know I love a good social media strategy, but if you have 8 different platforms, and you’re doing each one half hearted, here is your permission to press pause on all but 1-2. Focus this next year on creating and executing well on just the platforms you wish to be on, and forget the rest. I suggest putting up one last “Follow me over at XYZ” post on each platform you’ll be moving away from, to direct your audience to where you want to be.

Remove 24/7 Access to you.

Say it with me: Boundaries are Profitable. You are the golden goose in your business, and if you are burnt out and no fun, your business will be burnt out and no fun. Decide now what your hours will be for Quarter one, and create that boundary. This might look like putting your hours in your email signature, turning off notifications for social media, or using Focused settings on your phone for before and after work hours.

Remove the 12 Month Pressure.

I love a good planning session more than anyone, but I find that if I’m mapping out my daily routines, projects to deliver, or otherwise the journey for the next 12 months, I get bored. Life gets in the way, we have an off month, and I end up frustrated, feeling like I ‘failed’, (even if things are going well). Remove the pressure to have your entire year figured out by mapping out just your first 3 or 6 months. I like to set my big overarching goal for the year, and then map out just the first 12 weeks of action items and habits, then repeat for Q2, Q3, and Q4.

The excitement of a new calendar year begs for some dreaming and planning, but it’s also a great time to think about what you can do differently. Removing what no longer serves this version of you creates ease and space for all of the good that’s to come.  What’s one thing you’re removing from your business in 2023? I’d love for you to email me and tell me, and maybe can keep each other accountable past January 21. 🙂
